Hangzhou, China --- On December 30, 2020, Toumai® Laparoscopic Surgical Robot (hereinafter referred to as “Toumai®") independently developed by MicroPort® Medbot, a robotics-specialized subsidiary of Shanghai MicroPort® Medical (Group) Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Microport®") completed the robot-assisted single port laparoscopic partial nephrectomy at Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital.

The operation was performed by Professor Zhang Dahong, vice president of Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital and leader of urology. This is the first single-port partial nephrectomy performed by domestic Toumai® Laparoscopic Surgical Robot as well as the first single-port operation completed by domestic endoscopic robot in China.

The patient of the case, a 66-year-old female, was admitted to the Department of Urology, Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital 11 days earlier. Zhang Dahong, vice president, and Mao Zujie, director of the surgical team, made a detailed preoperative plan for the patient's condition, and decided to use the domestic Toumai® Laparoscopic Surgical Robot to perform robot-assisted single-port partial nephrectomy on the patient. The operation was performed by Vice President Zhang Dahong. A 3 cm incision was made in the patient's abdomen, a Laigis single-port channel was inserted, and the robot arm was connected. With the help of the 3D zooming surgical view field and flexible manipulator provided by Toumai® Laparoscopic Surgical Robot, Vice President Zhang Dahong completed the tumor resection and wound suture successfully. No hilar block was conducted during the operation, with a bleeding of 100ml and surgical time of 2 hours.

Professor Zhang Dahong commented after the operation that: "We have completed many cases of robot-assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy with Toumai® Laparoscopic Surgical Robot. The success of the first single-port partial nephrectomy with domestic robot in China has enhanced our confidence in Toumai® Laparoscopic Surgical Robot. Its stable and clear 3D vision and flexible surgical instruments can help the operator to complete a series of complicated operations with high precision within a very limited space. This can help patients reduce surgical trauma to patients, relieve their postoperative pain and promote postoperative rehabilitation while ensuring the safety and effectiveness of treatment."

Relative to the ordinary laparoscopic single-port procedure, the dexterity of robotic arms can overcome the shortcomings of traditional laparoscopic single-port surgery instruments, which affect the operation and visual field due to mutual interference and difficulty in cooperation. Meanwhile, the System can help the operator avoid the problems of hand-eye coordination and reverse operation encountered in traditional single-port operation. It highlights the precision advantages of the robot when implementing fine operation. In terms of surgical results, it can achieve the same therapeutic effect as multi-port operation. It is minimally invasive, safe and beautiful, and has the characteristics of less postoperative pain and faster recovery.

Dr. He Chao, President of MicroPort® MedBot, said: "The successful completion of first case of partial nephrectomy with domestic endoscopic robot in China symbolizes a new peak of MicroPort® MedBot in clinical application! So far, Toumai® Laparoscopic Surgical Robot has become the second endoscopic surgical robot used in single-port operation in the world after Da Vinci Surgical System. The high recognition by clinical experts further enhances our confidence in the future. MicroPort® MedBot will continue to work with clinical experts to provide universal and intelligent surgical solutions that can save the lives of patients or reshape their quality of life."
