Shijiazhuang, Hebei — Recently, Toumai® Laparoscopic Surgical Robot (referred to as “Toumai®”) was selected into the surgical equipment series at the Forth Hospital of Hebei Medical University. Based on rigorous scientific research ethics verification, the first Toumai® robotic surgery was performed on April 4th, and since then, the robot has been scheduled for regular operations at various surgical departments and completed 1-2 robotic surgeries every day. The expert team from various departments of the hospital worked together and devoted themselves to research, completing several highly challenged surgical procedures by using Toumai® and creating many cases of the “first procedure by Chinese-made robot in Hebei Province”. The surgical procedures include gastrointestinal surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, thoracic surgery, urology, and gynecology. As of May 24th, a total of 32 surgeries were successfully completed, indicating that the Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University has proficient technology and excellent capabilities in the application of surgical robots, confirming also that the good clinical adaptability of MicroPort® Toumai® robot, which could help physicians continuously challenge and successfully complete highly difficult surgical procedures one after another, and assist in the high-quality construction of the hospital.
Repeated Hebei’s record achieved - Each department leverages their strengths to actively challenge difficult surgeries
From 0 case to 32 cases, completing thigh challenges is the core. The expert teams from various departments of the Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University leverage their expertise to relieve pain for more patients by taking full advantages of MicroPort® Toumai®.
On April 4th, the Department of General Surgery III selected a patient who underwent radical gastrectomy. The team led by President Qun Zhao operated MicroPort® Toumai® to successfully complete the surgery for the patient. This was also the first procedure assisted by Chinese-made surgical robot- at the Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University, which marks the beginning of Chinese-made surgical robot being able to handle various difficult surgical challenges in the hospital. During surgery, the medical staff worked closely together for quick installation and adjustment. The flexible and exquisite surgical instruments on Toumai® assisted the chief surgeon in completing large-scale tissue traction, dissection and cutting with minimal bleeding. According to the feedback from clinical follow-up, the patient recovered well after operation.

As to hepatobiliary surgery, the first minimally invasive surgery assisted by MicroPort® Toumai® was a radical cholecystectomy performed by President Li Peng. During surgery, President Li Peng took advantage of the robotic wrist joint to finely dissect the gallbladder triangle. With the 3D perspective provided by Toumai®, he effortlessly completed the liver tissue cutting and hemostasis.
The first case of lobectomy in thoracic surgery was performed by President Ziqiang Tian. With his superb surgical skills and a well-coordinated team, the entire process was smooth and precise, and the surgery was completed “bloodlessly”.
Other surgical departments in the hospital are actively and enthusiastically scheduling robotic surgeries that are highly difficult and challenged in the field, with the intention to gain different experience by using Toumai® robot. Wenbo Niu, Director of the Department of General Surgery II, completed the first radical resection of rectal cancer; Yongliang Ma, Director of the Urology Department, completed the first left radical nephrectomy; Li Li, Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, completed the first total hysterectomy + bilateral salpingectomy. Toumai® Laparoscopic Surgical Robot is equipped with tremor filtering technology, which effectively filters out hand tremors during lymph node dissection, greatly improving the accuracy and stability of surgery for deep and narrow areas and small tissues.
State-of-Art medical technology support to ensure progress of clinical applications in multiple departments
After completing a highly difficult hepatic carcinectomy assisted by MicroPort® Toumai®, President Li Peng accepted an interview by Hebei TV, saying that although the patient's tumor is not large, it was adjacent to the right hepatic portal blood vessel. Yet, Toumai® robot could leverage the advantages of robotic surgery, i.e., minimally invasiveness and 10 times magnification of the surgical FOV, to dissect hepatic portal blood vessels more precisely and clearly, reducing surgical damage to surrounding vascular tissues, reducing intraoperative bleeding, and facilitating patient recovery.
The successful completion of 32 cases in all departments by Toumai® robot at the Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University demonstrates the agility and mature performance of Toumai® robot as it is “always ready to respond to the call, to fight, to win”. As of now, Toumai® robot has been clinically validated and recognized by physicians in multiple departments such as gastroenterology, hepatobiliary surgery, thoracic surgery, urology, and gynecology. A huge tree that fills one’s arms grows from a tiny seedling; a nine-storied tower rises from a heap of earth. With the continuous promotion of the clinical application of Toumai® robot in hospitals across the country, MicroPort® MedBot® Group will polish better products, pushing products to be closer to clinical practice and serve the clinical needs, truly benefiting both medical staff and patients and fulfilling the original intention of MicroPort® MedBot® - to “eliminate difficult surgery around the world.”
