Zhenxiong, China --- The first case of robot-assisted total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has been successfully completed recently in Zhenxiong People's Hospital with Honghu Orthopedic Surgical Robot ("Honghu") independently developed by MicroPort NaviBot(Suzhou)Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Shanghai MicroPort MedBot (Group) Co., Ltd. The surgery was performed by Changsha Wu and his team, director of the Department of Spinal Joint Surgery of Zhenxiong People's Hospital, and Professor Chuan Li of No. 920 Hospital. Zhenxiong is one of the key counties of Yunnan Province that receives national assistance for rural revitalization, where some local medical and health infrastructures and medical skills are still weak, and the phenomenon of "incurring poverty due to illness and restored to poverty due to illness" still exists. And this has become a hard stone in the way of Zhenxiong County for winning the critical battle against poverty. In response to the call, MicroPort®MedBot® has entered Zhenxiong County to advance the local health, boost the poverty alleviation in depth and benefit the patients. Honghu can transform the traditional surgical experience into the base for digital surgical planning. For physicians who use robots for the first time, Honghu has a short learning curve and powerful in stability and high accuracy of robotic arms during operation. This enhances the confidence of operators and provides advanced orthopedic surgical solutions to more patients.

The patient of the case is 68 years old and has suffered from joint pain in both knees for more than 10 years. After preoperative evaluation and surgical plan confirmation, it was decided to use Honghu Orthopedic Surgical Robot to assist in the total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Before the surgery, a CT 3D reconstruction was performed of the knee joints through Honghu to formulate a personalized surgical solution. Honghu human-computer interactive surgical platform (Honghu HCI Platform) guided the robotic arm registration and bone registration nimbly during the surgery, the robotic arms accurately moved to the preplanned position, assisted Director Changsha Wu in osteotomy of femur and tibia.

Postoperative measurement shows that the actual osteotomy is completely consistent with the planned value. The patient recovered well after the operation. It can be seen in the full-length radiograph of the lower limb that the force line had been accurately restored, which proved the precise and efficient performance of Honghu.

Changsha Wu, director of the Department of Spinal Joint Surgery of Zhenxiong People's Hospital, said: "The robot performs intelligent segmentation, the surgical process is very smooth, and the time for operation has been reduced. The model, the position and angle for placement of prosthesis used are highly consistent with preoperatively planned. For the patient, the amount of bleeding in conventional orthopedic surgery decreased significantly, and the possibility of surgical complications was effectively reduced. As for postoperative rehabilitation, the time for hospitalization and postoperative rehabilitation is obviously shorter than similar cases conducted before, and the comprehensive surgery cost for the patient is significantly reduced.”
