Yunnan Tour of | MicroPort®MedBot®-Assisted TKA Multi-Center Research —— TKA Assisted by Orthopedic Surgery Robot Successfully Completed in Chuxiong Prefecture Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, the Only Provincial Yi Ethnic Medical Hospital of China

Chuxiong, China --- A case of robot-assisted total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has been successfully completed recently in the Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Chuxiong Prefecture with Honghu Orthopedic Surgical Robot ("Honghu) independently developed by MicroPort NaviBot (Suzhou) Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Shanghai MicroPort MedBot (Group) Co., Ltd. (MedBot®).The four consecutive surgeries were completed by the team led by Guangmin Pu, director of Orthopedics and Traumatology Department III of Chuxiong Prefecture Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, and Professor Chuan Li of No. 920 Hospital. The hospital is the only Provincial Yi Ethnic Medical Hospital of China as well as one of the MedBot® multi-center research teams of Yunnan Province. Its success in surgery symbolizes its opening of an era of orthopedic robot surgery. The four patients all suffered severe knee osteoarthritis, repeated knee pain, dysfunction and lameness, and received conservative treatment in the past without good curative effect but serious troubles in their daily lives.

 

After the patients were admitted to the hospital, the team led by Director Guangmin Pu of Orthopedics and Traumatology Department III examined them in details, worked out a careful treatment plan, and decided to implement the robot-assisted TKA.

 

The HCI operation platform guided the robotic arm registration and bone registration nimbly during the procedure. The robotic arms accurately moved to the expected planned position, achieved the intellectualization of HCI, controlled the surgical accuracy perfectly and assisted Director Guangmin Pu in the osteotomy of femur and tibia and compatible with the latest MicroPort®Orthopedics medial-pivot knee system,, the whole operation was completed smoothly and efficiently.

 

Postoperative measurement shows that the actual osteotomy is completely consistent with the planned value. The patient recovered fast after the operation, and the lower limb showed that the force line had been accurately recovered, which proved the precise characteristics of Honghu.
 

Guangmin Pu, director of Orthopedics and Traumatology Department III said that TKA is the ultimate means to treat severe knee osteoarthritis. It can significantly relieve the pain of patients' knee joints, improve joint mobility, correct the deformity of knee joints, and thus improve the quality of life. Compared with traditional procedure, accurate measurement can be made of the patient in a robot-assisted total knee arthroplasty (TKA) before procedure, thus realizing the intelligent 3D planning and avoiding the damage from intraoperative pulp-chamber opening and location. The intraoperative osteotomy as accurate as 1mm and 1° significantly improves the installation stability and accuracy of prosthesis, avoids the artificial measurement errors, poor prosthesis position and other factors on postoperative recovery, and accurately recovers the force line. Meanwhile, bleeding is effectively reduced, the time for operation is shortened and the accuracy and safety of operation is enhanced, thus achieving accurate operation, quick recovery and improvement of long-term curative effect.
