From November 18 to 20, 2022, the Annual Conference of Chinese Urological Doctor Association ("CUDA Annual Conference") was grandly held online. It was hosted by Chinese Medical Doctor Association and Chinese Urological Doctor Association, and organized by Urology Branch of Beijing Medical Association and Urological Doctor Branch of Beijing Medical Doctor Association. Consisting of symposium and demonstration of live surgery, the conference covers a variety of topics such as prostatic cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer, surgical robot, tumor and stones, providing a great opportunity for urological professionals to exchange ideas.
The conference of this year has attracted a large number of experts and scholars from the fields of urology and other medical sectors both abroad and at home, which aims to build a high-performance team of Chinese urological doctors and improve academic communication between China and the West. Professor Dahong Zhang from Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital delivered a lecture on “The Application of Chinese-developed Toumai® Surgical Robot in Urology”, and demonstrated the outstanding performance and surgical application of the robot to urological surgeons and experts at the conference.
The opening ceremony is presided by Prof. Jianxing Li from Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital. Chairman and director committee members of the conference delivered speeches with online views exceeding 210,000. "Urology Surgery Contributes to a Healthy China" - Dedicated to providing urological patients with more professional, comprehensive medical services of higher quality, the Chinese Urological Doctor Association has always been working on surgeon training, talent cultivation, academic communication and clinical practice. By connecting urological surgeons across the country, it builds consensus, follows updates in the field of science and research, and promotes discipline building to meet the demands of the era.
On November 19, in the themed lecture of "Follow the Trend and Accelerate Development - A Special Column on The Surgical Robot", Professor Dahong Zhang introduced to the conference audiences the clinical application, functional performance and surgical results of Toumai® Surgical Robot by sharing clinical surgery case.
He analyzed and commented on Toumai® from the perspectives of accuracy and flexibility of the robotic arm, high-resolution vision and its pioneering significance in terms of 5G remote surgery. The review of the first partial nephrectomy completed by Toumai® demonstrated its 3D high-resolution vision and the angular accuracy of the robotic arm. In the case of radical prostatectomy, Professor Dahong Zhang shared the characteristics and advantages of Toumai® in operation: on the one hand, the endoscope supports autonomous control, and the vision may instantly follow the operation, providing convenience for adjusting observation priority. On the other hand, the needle holder enables needle access from any director, which helps achieve smooth operation and an ideal result.
In addition, Professor Dahong Zhang also introduced a typical tool of medical-engineering integration - Dahong Scissor that integrates the functions of cutting and needle holding. As an innovative R&D accomplishment in the field of high-end domestic medical devices, Dahong Scissor is a clinical transformation of his patent "Laparoscopic Surgical Instrument Integrating Arc Scissor and Needle Holder" developed by MicroPort® MedBot® and applied in Toumai®. It may reduce the total number and switch of surgical instruments required during the surgery, and help the surgeon complete function-preserving radical prostatectomy and radical cystectomy with an accurate operation. Besides, it also reduces surgery costs and the risk of infection.
Professor Zhang also introduced the technological and clinical breakthroughs made by Toumai® in the field of 5G remote surgery. The remote connection enables remote control and operation of the surgery, promotes access to diagnosis and treatment protocol, medical technique and surgery capability, and improves the capability of county-level hospitals to perform complex operations, thus bringing benefits to more patients. Professor Zhang said, "With the development of medical-engineering integration, domestic surgical robots are continuously being optimized and the technology gap with the international level is also narrowing. I believe they will be able to meet the demands of cross-discipline, cross-department and complicated surgeries as it progresses in terms of intelligence, minimally/non-invasive operation and miniaturization."
