Shanghai, China — Up to June 26, over 1000 robot-assisted surgeries have been performed in urology, hepatobiliary surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, thoracic surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, breast and thyroid surgery and other departments of more than 40 hospitals in 20 provinces across the country by using Toumai® four-arm laparoscopic surgical robot (Toumai® robot for short) of Shanghai MicroPort MedBot (Group) Co., Ltd. (MicroPort® MedBot® for short) in strict accordance with research ethics, covering difficult and complex procedures such as pelvic, abdominal, and thoracic surgeries. Among them, over 500 surgeries have been conducted from January to June in 2023, creating the new record for number of robot-assisted laparoscopic surgeries in China. Experience of 1000 surgeries indicates that Toumai® robot has good clinical suitability, and is becoming a well established technology in clinical application. It can fully meet the clinical requirements of multiple departments, help doctors continue to challenge and successfully complete difficult surgeries, and help the hospital continuously achieve high-quality development in clinical and scientific research.

Toumai® Laparoscopic Surgical Robot

In December 2022, a Toumai® Laparoscopic Surgical Robot, the first four-arm laparoscopic surgical robot approved by NMPA for marketing, had been sold and installed for commercial use. With the naked eye 3D high-definition view, and high degree of freedom artificial wrist, Toumai® robot can provide doctors with a very realistic surgical experience and eye-hand-mechanical synchronization, demonstrating a leading technology among Chinese robots.

After marketing, Toumai® robot assists Chinese top experts in urology, hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, thoracic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, obstetrics and gynecology and other areas to continuously challenge difficult surgeries, broaden its application in clinical surgeries. It is used not onlyin the classic surgical surgeries in the field of urology, including radical prostatectomy, nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy, adrenalectomy, ureteral bladder reimplantation, and other difficult procedures, but also in general surgery, thoracic surgery, and gynecological surgery, the first among Chinese robots.

These include dozens of Chinese robot-assisted high-difficulty surgeries, such as the first Chinese robot-assisted radical prostatectomy, the first Chinese robot-assisted single-port surgery, the first Chinese robot-assisted partial nephrectomy, the first Chinese robot-assisted radical resection for lung cancer, the first Chinese robot-assisted radical gastrectomy, and the first Chinese robot-assisted radical nephrectomy, the first Chinese robot-assisted liver resection, the first Chinese robot-assisted hysterectomy, the first Chinese robot-assisted colon cancer radical surgery, the first 5G ultra-remote robot-assisted urological surgery, the first 5G remote robot-assisted gastric cancer radical surgery, the first 5G ultra-remote robot-assisted hepatobiliary surgery, the first 5G ultra-remote robot-assisted gynecological surgery, and the first 5G ultra-remote robot-assisted lobectomy in animal experiment.

In addition, a series of difficult surgeries have been completed in many hospitals with assistance of Tumai® robots, indicating its routine use in clinical surgeries. Among them, 5 distal pancreatectomy surgeries have been completed in pancreatic surgery department of Ruijin Hospital of Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine; 32 surgeries have been completed in the Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University; 50 surgeries have been completed in the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University; 50 clinically validated surgeries have been completed in obstetrics and gynecology department of the Second Hospital of Dalian Medical University; 50 urinary system tumor surgeries have been completed in Shanghai Changhai Hospital; 50 surgeries have been completed in the Affiliated Provincial Hospital of Shandong First Medical University; 70 surgeries have been completed in People's Hospital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region; 72 surgeries have been completed in the urology department of First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine.

During the successful completion of these difficult surgeries, Toumai® was continuously optimized according to suggestions from clinicians, so as to bring better experience for surgeons.

Experience of 1000 surgeries, as a major milestone, not only provides a significant scientific basis for important clinical research and theoretical practice, filling in the gaps in relevant fields in China, but also fully verifies the indications, clinical utility, operation convenience, stability and innovation of Toumai®.

Indications and clinical utility of Toumai® robot verified through difficult surgical procedures

Toumai® robot was granted a registration certificate in January 2022 by NMPA for urology surgeries, and became the first four-arm laparoscopic surgical robot developed by Chinese companies and approved for marketing.

In addition, confirmatory clinical trials of Toumai® robot used in general surgery, thoracic surgery and gynecological endoscopic surgery has been completed in April 2022, covering multiple first robot-assisted or difficult surgeries in the above fields, thus filling in the gaps in clinical use of Chinese robots. Toumai® robot also became the world second, and the Chinese first laparoscopic surgery robot that is indicated for important and complex surgical procedures in the fields of thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic surgery.

Innovativeness of robot verified by ultra-remote surgeries

Even the advanced technologies require constant innovation. How to promote innovation on the basis of new generation information technology is a hurdle in front of hospitals. Nowadays, with breakthrough in core technologies such as 5G remote control and large-capacity image remote real-time transmission, Toumai® can minimize the delay of images and controls, enable 5G remote surgery with communication distance of more than 5000km, and achieve the functions of real-time monitoring and early warning of network communication quality, to ensure the safe and successful completion of the surgery. This allows hospitals to successfully jump over the said hurdle.

Up to now, after strict and sufficient technical verification, animal experiments, and scientific and ethical demonstration, Toumai® Robot and other Robots of MicroPort® MedBot® have assisted medical staff in multiple locations to complete dozens of 5G-based remote surgeries. MicroPort® MedBot® is by now the surgical robot company that has successfully completed remote clinical surgeries in most departments (including urology, thoracic surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, pancreatic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, and orthopedics) with its product worldwide. The successive “first cases” are not only a major breakthrough in medical field of China, but also a strong proof that Chinese 5G technology and medical device technology are already at the forefront of the world.
